Pet Spay & Neuter

As part of our commitment to helping the pets of Sherman and surrounding areas stay healthy, we highly recommend having them spayed or neutered before they’re a year old. While pet spay and neuter surgeries are an important deterrent against unwanted pregnancies and overpopulation, they are also very beneficial to your pet’s long-term health. HOW SPAYING/NEUTERING BENEFITS YOUR PET’S HEALTH

Both male and female pets can experience various health and behavioral benefits from their spay or neuter surgery:

  • Females will not go into heat or become pregnant
  • Males may be less likely to become aggressive after being neutered
  • Males are also less likely to engage in inappropriate behaviors like mounting objects, animals, or people
  • Both males and females will have less desire to roam
  • Females will have much lower breast cancer and uterine cancer risks
  • Males will have a lower risk of developing an enlarged prostate and no testicular cancer risks

WILL MY PET’S PERSONALITY CHANGE?

Spaying and neutering can result in certain health and behavioral changes for your pet. However, do not expect your pet to have a different personality after their surgery. Hormones do not have an effect on their intelligence and personal quirks.

WHY DO PETS NEED TO BE SPAYED AND NEUTERED EARLY?

We generally recommend that pets be spayed and neutered at 6 months old. This allows most pets enough time to develop and minimizes future health risks. However, extra-large breed dogs take a little longer to grow, so it may be best to wait a few months more before having them undergo surgery.

A thorough checkup and discussion about your pet’s needs will help you choose the best time for their surgery. If you have additional questions about spaying/neutering your pet, call us at 903-300-1547 to schedule an appointment with one of our veterinarians.
